Presidential candidate António Filipe said Friday that the President's decision to ask the Constitutional Court to conduct a preventive review of the proposed revision of the law on foreigners was "fully justified."

António Filipe, speaking to journalists at the end of a visit to the Alfeite Arsenal, at the naval base located in Laranjeiro, in the municipality of Almada, said that, both in the parliamentary and public debate, there were voices from prestigious constitutionalists regarding the unconstitutionality of many of the provisions of the diploma approved by the Assembly of the Republic.

"I believe the President of the Republic's decision is completely justified," stressed presidential candidate António Filipe, a lawyer, former PCP member of parliament, and former vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic.

On Wednesday, the President of the Republic sent to the Constitutional Court the parliamentary decree that amends the legal regime governing the entry, stay, exit and removal of foreigners from the national territory, approved by the PSD, Chega and CDS-PP parties.

The request for inspection, which the head of state requested to be carried out urgently, challenges the changes to family reunification introduced into the regime for the entry of foreigners into the country, invoking the principle of family unity and the best interests of the child.
